I have been invited to give a seminar for master students in Accounting Information Systems on Database Management. I compiled all information on the topic to date and come up with this presentation. Hope they are useful.

I personally think that modern graphic designers and information specialists should possess "interactive" design skills. I add this topic to my lectures on Multimedia that I gave at Graduate school of Mass Communication Technology, Ramkhamhaeng University.  In summary, if you have to produce interactive infographics, you need to know HTML5, JQuery and CSS. I hope my materials provide you with a good start.

Please steal like an artist

In my perception, it seems that Thais lack originality. It roots from somewhere or may be it's in our DNA that we couldn't do it or lack the ability to invent something new. So it is very normal to see majority of students copy their friends' homework. This expands to almost everything else in life. To make it worse, everyone doesn't want to be branded stupid, being punished and wants to be portrayed as a capable one so they copy with no shame. This becomes habits. I think it should end now. Thanks to Austin Kleon and his book "Steal like an artist", now I have a reference when I teach my students that they don't have to be ashamed of copying. Simply being a good thief by following Austin's suggestions.

การลอกกันเป็นปัญหาใหญ่ของสังคมไทย นำมาซึ่งการไร้สามัญสำนึก ไร้ความรู้สึกผิดชอบชั่วดีเมื่อโตเป็นผู้ใหญ่ และอาจจะพาลไปถึงการกล้าโกงในระดับที่ใหญ่ ไม่ว่าจะเพราะสาเหตุอะไรก็ตาม ด้วยหน้าที่ของอาจารย์จะต้องพยายามลดปัญหานี้

เด็ก ๆ ไทยส่วนใหญ่ก็ไม่ค่อยมีความคิดสร้างสรรค์ สั่งให้คิด ทำ อะไรก็ทำไม่ค่อยได้ อยากแต่จะลอกเพื่อนหรือลอกคนอื่น แต่ก็ไม่อยากจะโดน อ ด่าว่าโง่ หรือ หักคะแนน อยากให้ อ รู้สึกว่า นศ ก็ไม่แย่นะ ก็เลยพยายามหาเทคนิคมาลอกไม่ให้ อ จับได้

ตอนนี้ อ ได้ที่พึ่งใหม่สำหรับการอบรมเรื่องนี้ คือหนังสือของคุณออสติน ที่เข้าใจปัญหานี้ดี จึงออกหนังสือเล่มนี้ชื่อ "Steal like an artist" (ขโมยอย่างศิลปิน) มาพร้อมกับให้กฎการขโมยงานอย่างหัวขโมยผู้มีจรรยาบรรณ มีอะไรบ้าง มาดูกัน

1. ลอกไปเลย ด้วยจิตระลึกบุญคุณต้นฉบับ
2. ศึกษางานต้นฉบับให้เข้าใจอย่างลึกซึ้งว่าเค้าทำอย่างไร คิดอย่างไร ถึงได้งานที่เราอยากลอกสุด ๆ ออกมา
3. ลอกจากหลาย ๆ คนที่เก่ง ๆ ดัง ๆ มาผสมกันจะดูเท่ห์มาก
4. ให้เครดิตให้ครบทุกคน ห้ามเนียนเอาเป็นงานตัวเองเด็ดขาด (โดยเฉพาะข้อนี้ต้องทำให้เป็นสันดานให้ได้)
5. แต่ถ้าจะแก้ไขงานเค้าให้เป็นของตัวเองต้องทำให้ดีขึ้น ถือเป็นการให้เกียรติ
6. ผสมงานที่ลอกมากับสไตล์ของตัวเองให้ได้งานใหม่ที่มีความเป็นเอกลักษณ์เฉพาะตัว

ทำได้ทั้งหกข้อนี้ จนเป็นนิสัยจะทำให้เรามีชิ้นงานที่เป็นสไตล์ของตัวเองในที่สุด
แล้วก็จะมีภาพลักษณ์ที่ดูเป็นนักศึกษาที่น่าชื่นชมในความใฝ่ใจเรียนรู้

My Grandpa

RIP..I love you.

My grandpa is a normal guy in his 90 who had dementia for years. He called everyone including myself 'mama' because he knew we were taking care of him. He passed away on Feb 5, 2010 (on my mom BD). He's a farmer and a sub-district headman all his life till he fell ill. He's a humble man and very generous.

Most of the time he wouldn't remember anything. Sometimes when he did, he would tell people that I'm doing a PhD in England and he's waiting for me. I am glad he's proud of me; the only thing I regret is that I couldn't finish it in time. This degree means so much to him and to so many other people (more than to me). Sometimes I took it for granted.

He had lived a good life. I'll miss him a lot.

London Countdown information, preparation and tips

This information was based on the 2009/2010 countdown

If you want to be at the front row in front of the London Eye, you should arrive the venue at 5-6 pm. The best location to see it is just exactly the opposite of the giant wheel. Get off the Westminster tube station and walk along the predefined path into the river bank. If you want to stay on the bridge, do research the official plan because the bridge might be closed on Westminster side) (it was closed in 2009/2010). You might have to get off the Waterloo station in order to stay on the bridge.

The difference between being at the front and at the side of Wheel is that you will see fireworks from different angles. Some fireworks were 3D. They were fired towards audiences but I didn't see the 3D effect because I was at the front. Seeing from the BBC video, the side view gave a pretty impressive effect, e.g. when the fireworks were fired towards us.

At the river bank on the opposite of the London Eye, it was fully occupied by 9 PM and I think the area was closed down after that. (based on 2008/2009 information, the area was closed at 9 PM).

In 2009/2010 London countdown, there were 200000 people at the venue.

Prepare food and wear a lot of clothes. Do not drink too much water before or during the waiting because there is no or not enough facility.

In 2009/2010 countdown, there were free transportation all night. The Westminster station was closed, you just have to walk a bit further to St.James' park station. After the countdown, wait around the area for at least half an hour. You will find your journey home quite pleasant.

I reach my accommodation by 1 AM. Pretty awesome night and the fireworks were so spectacular and extravaganza. It's worth every minute.
